{"id":1708,"date":"2012-05-17T13:21:11","date_gmt":"2012-05-17T13:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cg-blog.com\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2013-04-15T09:30:20","modified_gmt":"2013-04-15T09:30:20","slug":"add-gamma-vray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cg-blog.com\/index.php\/2012\/05\/17\/add-gamma-vray.htm","title":{"rendered":"Different ways to add Gamma in your renders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every real device to take pictures adds gamma.<\/p>\n<p>We actually are &#8220;producers&#8221; of images and we need to correctly setup the gamma in 3ds Max, in order to imitate the behavior of real cameras.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 3ds Max the options we have to add gamma are various:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gamma in &#8220;output&#8221; \/ preferences<\/li>\n<li>Gamma \/ color mapping<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t Affect colors \/ color mapping<\/li>\n<li>sRGB button \/V-Ray Frame Buffer (VFB)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Every option in this list affects gamma.<br \/>\nAs you can understand we can&#8217;t use all at the same time!<br \/>\n<strong>We have to choose a combination to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">just adds 2,2.. once!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to show you how many combinations are possible and you&#8217;ll see just one way is the correct one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>COMBINATION 1 : Gamma in.. OUTPUT<span style=\"color: #339966;\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">follow the green arrow<\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Gamma in &#8220;output&#8221; \/ <span style=\"color: #000000;\">preferences = <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2,2<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Gamma in color mapping = 1,0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Gamma in VFB (sRGB button) = disabled<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cg-blog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/combination1-gammaoutput1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1714\" title=\"way4b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cg-blog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/way1b-300x240.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Brief Explaination:<\/em><br \/>\nYou&#8217;re adding 2,2 to the final image. In these case sRGB button is really useful to preview how the image will looks after added gamma in compositing.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>CONCLUDING<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Resuming all combinations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Way1<\/strong> produces artfacts<\/li>\n<li><strong>Way2<\/strong> is just a wrong usage of sGRB button! :-\\<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ways 3 and 4 are correct but it depends on your operating mode:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Way3<\/strong> is simple and ieffective to add gamma during the render (my favourite)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Way4<\/strong> is for adding gamma in a different moment from the rendering (compositing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I showed you also Way1 and 2 to let you avoid these ways!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Note 1<\/strong><\/span>: If your image is correct in 3ds max but really brighten in photoshop the causes are 2:<br \/>\n1) check output value in preferences: it must be 1,0<br \/>\n2) you just used Way2<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Note 2<\/strong><\/span>: Of course if you use gamma in color mapping + gamma in output + sRGB button&#8230; you&#8217;re completely wrong. Gamma added will be 2,2 + 2,2 + 2,2&#8230; and your image will results completely washed out!
